Nigerian News Headlines Today
Nigerian major newspapers have focused on series of
trending stories in the polity which includes the start of
former president, Goodluck Jonathan’s government’s
probe, the cash crunch in the house of representatives,
hope rising for local refineries and others.
Guardian reports that local refineries may have been
roused from years of avoidable slumber and
incapacitation, going by information coming from the two
located in Warri and Port Harcourt.
Lack of proper maintenance of the ageing equipment and
corruption have mostly been blamed for a situation in
which the refineries, for many years, failed to provide
petroleum products for domestic use, much less for
export. As a result, Nigeria was forced into a near-total
importation of such products like Premium Motor Spirit
(petrol), Automotive Gas Oil (diesel), Liquefied Petroleum
Gas (LPG) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) among
others.

Daily Sun reports that the immediate past National
Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), has said
former President Goodluck Jonathan acquired
sophisticated weapons for the military in the last year of
his administration.
He also revealed that western powers frustrated Nigeria’s
attempt to buy military weapons from them as well as
sabotaged efforts to purchase from other sources.
In a release yesterday, he named some of the military
equipment so acquired as Alpha jets, APCs, MRAP
vehicles, advanced artillery pieces, assorted arms and
ammunition, highly sophisticated surveillance drones and
T72. He also said the government carried out
modification of F7 supersonic jet fighters.

Meanwhile, the man the Economic and Fiancial Crimes
Commission is seeking to question over the $2.1 million
cash seized at the Lagos Airport yesterday denied that he
was on the run.
A former Executive Secretary of the National Health
Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Dr. Olufemi Thomas, said he
was ready to be at the EFCC whenever he is invited.
His media aide, Mr. Sola Adeyemi, in a statement in
Lagos, said: “Dr. Femi Thomas is a law-abiding public
individual that has traceable addresses in Lagos and Ekiti.
He is a man that I work with and I know him for his words
and actions. As I speak, we are yet to receive any formal
invitation from any quarter on the allegation.
“For the avoidance of doubt, my boss is not on the run, he is
in Nigeria, he is available and ready to present himself to the
EFCC as soon as he is invited.”

In other news, the cut in the budget of the National
Assembly from N150bn to N120bn is beginning to hit
members of the House of Representatives hard, resulting
in unpaid salaries.
The 360-member legislature has not paid the June and
July salaries of lawmakers. Findings by The Punch on
Thursday showed that the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, took
hours to lament the poor financial situation of the house
during a crucial meeting with his colleagues in
Abuja. Delayed releases by the finance ministry has also
been identified as one of the factors contributing to the
cash crunch facing the lawmakers.
Investigations showed that the lawmakers were expected
to receive about N18m each in June when they arrived in
Abuja for the new term. The money was to cover
accommodation, furniture and other provisions worked
out in line with percentages in their template.
However, they were said to have been paid only N10m as
the House leadership simply said it could not afford the
N18m.
